On July 26, 2006 Drew will take to the track for the first time in 2006 in a Seymour-prepared Hawk USAC Ford Focus Midget. The 2006 edition of OPEN WHEEL WEDNESDAY at ” The Cement Palace,” Seekonk Speedway, in Seekonk, Massachusetts will be the inaugural outing for Drew in USAC competitions this year.

The hiatus from the seat of a race car has been a love-hate moment for Drew during this early season of racing. Drew completed his engineering studies at Maine Maritime Academy in late April and then he sailed off for sixty days on the required MMA training cruise aboard the State of Maine. While Drew cruised to ports in Spain, Poland and Ireland along the way his thoughts were academic on a daily basis but the thought of racing was always there.

Finally, the school effort ended on June 26 and now Drew is available to enjoy his passion.

The 2006 Hawk chassis will be sponsored once again by the great folks of Briggs and Stratton and Casella Waste Systems, Inc. Associate sponsors include Oakley, StanleyVidmar Storage Systems, Simpson Race Products, The Race Depot and Mobil 1.

Drew will be testing the new Hawk midget on several occasions prior to the July 26 event at Seekonk. Please check back in on Drew’s progress in his now twelfth season of racing.

Starting in 1995 in NHRA Junior Drag Racing League competitions Drew has utilized the power of Briggs and Stratton engines and their global dominance of being ” The World’s Largest Small Engine Manufacturer ” in competitions and in representation at tracks across the United States,Canada and Europe.

Over the last twelve years Drew has promoted Briggs and Stratton in over 600 competition starts in NHRA and IHRA Junior Drag Racing,ASN Canada FIA Karting,WKA Karting,Red Bull Driver Searches,Skip Barber Formula Dodge,Formula BMW ADAC and USAC Racing activities.

In Drew’s words, ” Once again, Dave Klaus and the great people of Briggs and Stratton have continued to believe in me as a driver and as a marketing spokesperson. As I am an engineering student at Maine Maritime Academy it is very rewarding to be associated with the tremendous mechanical engineering qualities that Briggs and Stratton has built into their vast product lineup.I continue to learn and to appreciate what it takes to make those products and to maintain their supremacy in worldwide sales.

“Casella Waste Systems,Inc. will again be on board with Drew in 2006.Casella joined Drew in 2005 and now 2006 will mark the second year of their marketing relationship. Drew had this to say, “Obtaining sponsors in motorsports will always be more difficult than winning races.In 2006 Casella Waste Systems,Inc. will join me for the second season of promotional activities.I believe that any racer can sign on a sponsor for one season…it’s the next year that doesn’t always materialize.I am so proud to be able to represent the great people of Casella for the second year and I will do my best to put their name in Victory Lane.”

In 2006 Drew will be at the wheel of a USAC Ford Focus Midget prepared by Bobby and Mike Seymour,legendary USAC owners and competitors of Marlborough, Massachusetts.Seymour Enterprises and their online store,The Race Depot,will continue for the second year as the base of operations for Drew in the USAC program.” 2005 was my second year of activities with the Seymours and in USAC competitions.I had the privilege to work in their shop in the summer of 2005 and to be able to assist in the construction of the Hawk midget chassis that I raced last year.What I learned from Bobby,Mike and Steve in the shop and at the track was invaluable to my career in racing.It is a gift to me to be in their company for another season of competitions in midgets,”Drew stated.

Drew’s racing season will not kick off until July as Drew will be at sea on the Training Vessel STATE OF MAINE until June 28.Drew sails from the Port of Castine,Maine on April 28 and he will return to the Maine Maritime Academy docks on June 28.The 60-day training cruise is a requirement of the Maine Maritime Academy College of Marine Engineering Technology degree program and of The Regiment,the leadership module of MMA.Drew will sail to ports in Ireland,Spain and Poland during the two-month educational experience.

Drew Sprague is a Commissioned Midshipman,4/C in the U.S.Flag Merchant Marines,a Reservist in the Merchant Marines,a member of The Regiment and a member of the Class of 2009 of Maine Maritime Academy.Drew is a first-year degree engineering student and he has achieved the Dean’s List in his studies of technical math and sciences.
